Twenty-five years is a long time
In 2001, the world looked very different. Mobile phones were getting smaller, the internet was still finding its feet, and nobody had heard of Zoom, Teams or working from home.
At Answer4u, we were at a very different stage of our own journey too.
And somewhere along the way, Jackie Parkin became a very important part of it.
Now, 25 years after joining the business, Jackie is our Training Manager, a familiar face to countless colleagues and, quite possibly, the undisputed queen of the Post-it Note.
From call handling agent to Training Manager
Jackie's Answer4u story started in 2001, when she joined the business as a call handling agent.
Since then, she has grown alongside the company, taking on new challenges, adapting to change and building an incredible depth of knowledge along the way.
Today, Jackie leads our training department, supporting new recruits and established team members alike. Her role is about much more than teaching people how to handle calls.
It is about helping people build confidence.
It is about giving new starters the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
Most importantly, it is about being there for people.
Jackie has a remarkable ability to make people feel supported. For many new starters, she becomes something of a mother figure during those first few weeks and months.
She genuinely cares about people doing well and will go out of her way to help them get there.
That commitment has made a lasting difference to generations of Answer4u agents.
The smile, the positivity and the Post-its
If you've ever worked with Jackie, there are probably a few things you will immediately associate with her.
First, there is that smile.
Jackie's infectious smile rarely leaves her face. She doesn't exactly glide into a room either. She has a habit of bouncing into it with the sort of positivity that makes you wonder where she keeps the spare batteries.
Then there are the emails.
Anyone who has received a message from Jackie knows that no email is truly complete without a generous collection of smiley emojis. Somehow, she has perfected the art of communicating an entire paragraph while simultaneously covering the screen in 😊😊😊😊😊.
And then, of course, there are the Post-it Notes.
Lots and lots of Post-it Notes.
If something needs remembering, there is a very good chance Jackie has already written it down. It may be stuck to her monitor. It may be attached to a desk. It may even be waiting somewhere for an unsuspecting colleague to discover.
After 25 years, we can only imagine how many Post-its Jackie has worked her way through.
The IT Department has questions
Jackie's relationship with Post-it Notes has even made its way into the IT Department.
As they put it:
“We don't need Wordle in the office. Deciphering Jackie's IT support tickets is challenging enough”
Apparently, one particular favourite read:
Naturally, this left the IT team scratching their heads.
Was Jackie freezing while the computer was overheating?
Was the office freezing while Jackie was getting very hot?
Was the printer having some sort of existential crisis?
Or had Jackie somehow managed to discover a brand-new IT problem that nobody else had encountered in the history of technology?
Whatever the issue was, we're sure the full explanation made perfect sense.
Eventually.
A little bit of sparkle
And then there was the day a team member opened a drawer tucked away in the corner of an unused room and discovered it was full of glitter and confetti.
Naturally, the first question was, "Why on earth is this here?"
Then came the second thought.
"When I found a drawer full of glitter and confetti, I knew exactly who would make use of it."
Jackie, of course.
Because if there is glitter, confetti or anything that could make a celebration that little bit more cheerful, Jackie will find a use for it.
In fact, we're beginning to suspect that somewhere in the building, Jackie has a secret stash of party supplies, just waiting for the right occasion.
After 25 years, we've learned one thing for certain. Never underestimate Jackie's ability to turn an ordinary day into an excuse for a little more colour, creativity and fun.
25 years of making a difference
Behind all the jokes, there is something much more important.
Jackie is incredibly hard-working, reliable and completely committed to the people she works with.
Her contribution to Answer4u goes far beyond her job title.
She has spent years helping people learn, improve and grow. She has supported countless new starters as they have found their feet and helped established agents continue to develop their skills.
That experience matters.
So does the way Jackie shares it.
Her knowledge, patience and willingness to help have made her an incredibly important part of the Answer4u team.
A few things may never change
Of course, 25 years at Answer4u wouldn't be complete without mentioning Jackie's other great passion.
Leicester City.
We could probably leave it there.
But we won't.
Given their recent fortunes, sympathy may be more appropriate than criticism. And anyone who knows Jackie will already be aware that she is also a massive Jamie Vardy fan.
We're not sure how many Post-it Notes have been used to record Leicester City results over the years, but we suspect the number is considerable.
A legacy built on people
Jackie's journey is a great example of what 25 years with one business can mean.
It is not simply about time served.
It is about the people you've helped, the knowledge you've shared, the challenges you've overcome and the positive impact you've had along the way.
Jackie has seen huge changes in the contact centre industry and within Answer4u itself. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: her commitment to doing a great job and helping the people around her.
As Sally-Ann, Head of Contact Centre Operations puts it:
“What makes Jackie so special isn't just what she does, it's how she does it. She brings warmth, professionalism and unwavering support to every interaction, and she's the kind of person who makes both work and life a little bit better for everyone around her.”
That sentiment is shared by everyone who has had the pleasure of working with Jackie.
